It's normal. Practice singing in the shower at first. Then, practice singing through a microphone so that you can build confidence. Plus, something special happens when there's a mic in your hand. All of a sudden you become (insert favorite singer's name here). Oh, and don't be afraid to really belt it out. once you know your actual range, you will have so much more confidence because you will know your limits. Also, drink plenty of water before practicing and maybe some hot tea. Oh, and drink a couple of beers (just a couple!!!). That will definitely make things easier for you. i used to be terrified to sing karaoke (although I have sung and played several instruments for bands in local bars and clubs). For some reason, karaoke is the scariest experience because you are all alone--you don't even have a band to back you up. What helped me to get over my fears of karaoke? Truly--a couple beers. Dude, it works.
