I used to do this in my teens. Was stress-related. I'd twist the back of my hair, which was longer, around a pen, pencil, or anything that wouldn't break while pulling (silverware, too), knot the hair around the pen or whatever, and pull away. The feeling was great, and it sounded so good, that strand by strand, all knotted up yanking.
Got to a point where the woman who cut my hair, a hot as hell blonde, who'd do the scalp massage thing and drive me crazy, noticed and directly asked..Are you pulling your hair out? It's thin back here. She knew I was.
Think I was slowing down doing it anyway, but, she made me a private little deal: stop pulling my hair out, and, next cut, she wouldn't wear her usual, oversized cover/smock thing, and instead just wear a tank top. She knew guys only went to her to eye her up, and, I was really no different. But, she liked me and knew my older sister, so, didn't want me doing damage by pulling out my hair. Figured motivate me by offering the chance to eye her body in tight jeans (which she always wore) and a tank top. It worked. Next cut, she pulled the smock thing off, and cut my hair in jeans and a low-cut, black tank top that gave such a good view.
I'm not sure if I can call it "normal," but I can at least tell you that you're not alone. Enjoying pulling out your hair or feeling the compulsion to pull out your hair is called trichotillomania. I've had it for years, and it's considered a psychological disorder. It can become a real problem.
