Stan's a better main character than just a Simpsons rip off painted a different colour, the jokes are relevant to the story, there's way less filler, they only politics the push is politics that's relevant to Stan's character and not your Family Guy "orange man bad, Obama good", and the absurdity is normally funnier, rather than Family Guy absurdity which is often just cringey.
For me its been the opposite, the humor in American Dad never really landed for me and it came off pretty cringey. Family guy may not be perfect but its absurdity is so over the top that it gets me because of it's ironic humor. To each their own I guess.
