I laugh at the wrong times?

I laugh at all the wrong and inappropriate times. For some reason I can't stop smirking in serious situations. Today someone in my class couldn't figure out an easy question and I suddenly burst out laughing. Not for a few seconds but a solid 10+ seconds. I was the only one laughing and let me remind you I'm a 24 year old adult. How mature of me. I can't control my laughter at all. I usually pinch myself but it's not very effective. I would even smirk if something horrible happens. Something is wrong with me.

Is It Normal?

  • You are somewhat mentally disabled, and that’s ok as long as you don’t interrupt the class too much.

  • I agree with the comments suggesting that it's nervous laughter. I used to be really bad about this when I was younger, and still do it sometimes as an adult (though I try really hard to contain it). It's like the more tense the situation is and the more pressure there is not to laugh, the harder it is not to! It was really bad for me when I was a kid and got in trouble, and was being scolded. Of course, the laughter only enraged my parents and teachers further!

  • That's a nervous response.

    I do it too.

  • Yeah I've known people like this, and I've done it a few times myself. Is it more of an emotional response? Like, are you actually thinking something about the situation is funny? Or is it a random reaction?

    • Most of the time I smirk and laugh involuntarily for no reason.

    • They're most likely a college student attending classes.

To the OP: laughing at someone who's putting in a legitimate effort is a dick move. Shit like that can make them scared to speak up or socialize because all they'll do is remember how humiliated they were. Learn to curb that before you ruin someone or yourself.

      • But it's involuntary though... It's not exactly something you can control

I don't mean to laugh at people. It just happens. It makes me feel incredibly guilty.

            • Nobody should ever feel guilty for things beyond their control.
And I can't count how many times I have accidentally had a nervous smile or nervous laugh (which happens when I am under pressure to react a certain negative way) and then I get called out for it, and every time that happens I feel like crying or burst into tears afterwards because of how unfair it is that I'm being punished for something that is out of my control.
