I hurt myself when i make a mistake

Be it accidentally saying something wrong or letting something fall from a shelf, I can hardly take it knowing I let something wrong happen. For the slightest things I hit myself; usually a few strikes to the jaw, forehead, or chest area.

I remember at some point in my life I tried living by a weird rule I made for myself: "When nobody is around to punish you for your wrongdoings, take it upon yourself."

Not that I was abused or anything of the sort; My parents did a wonderful job raising me.

In a way, I suppose the physical pain serves as a distraction from "mental pain", as I would call it.

Those punches to your jaw add up even if theyre light. CTE often doesnt show up until you're 50. You could give yourself early onset dementia if you do this commonly.

      A very good point.

The human brain doesn't deal well with impacts on the skull that shake it around inside the braincase. It's clear that some people are more predisposed to suffer long-term consequences than others, and the OP has no idea if he happens to be one of those people.

Some professional soccer players have been found to be suffering from Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) when virtually all the head impacts they've experienced were from heading balls, which you wouldn't think would be dangerous at all, given that the balls are light and not completely rigid.

I do stuff like this too, but it's not good for you, and you shouldn't do it.

Geez, all over letting something fall?

  • I think I went through something similar.

I felt compelled to inflict harm onto something to get rid of whatever rage I had in me, and I knew harming others was bad.

If I did something wrong, I always felt I would get hit for it, even if it was minor.

I put the two together, and ended up punching myself out of anger.

I think you need to talk this out with the appropriate counselor so that you can start reducing this habit.

It may be relatively harmless now... but these kinds of things rarely stay that way.

I wish you the best... and know that you can change things for the better.

That's not a good thing to do.

I used to physically hit myself when I didn't know how to control my temper. I eventually stopped because it got too painful. it left a lot of bruises but nothing serious.

Try to find something else to get rid of small frustrations instead of hurting yourself.

Self-harming is always a sign of some sort of mental health issue.

If you absolutely must hurt yourself to satisfy this compulsion, wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap yourself when the urge hits you. It'll hurt, but it's not going to do any lasting damage.

I hurt myself if I do something hypocritical. Every time was on accident but it doesn't matter, I still did it & if I don't punish myself for it then I would be a hypocrite.
