I haven’t had my period in a year (or a year and a half)

I’m 19. I have a very irregular menstrual cycles. Sometimes i get my period monthly for about 3-4 months then it stops completely for about 6-8 months then becomes regular again for two months then it stops and so on. Im really worried because it has been over a year and I havent had my period yet. I told my mom about this and she told me it’s normal for my age. When my sister told her doctor that she hasn’t had her period in 6 months, the doctor strictly suggested her to see an ob/gyn and it’s an urgent matter which made me even more nervous. I’m not sexually active. And I feel no pain at all. I’m scared that it might be cancer or something since it runs in our family.

It's a sad fact that most doctors won't listen to a woman and just brush off her concerns. I am almost 40 and have not had anyone listen to me even after multiple visits to the ER and making many complaints. At one point I was losing tons of blood and it even happened in person in the ER but they still didn't help me figure out what the problem was.

It happened to me for a year. They suspected PCOS but turned out not to be. You probably don't have cancer but they did tell me that if you don't have periods you could be more likely to get cancer from not having them so you need to get it checked out and maybe get on birth control. That's what I did and eventually the periods came back like normal.

  • If you're worried you should go see your doctor. I would definitely say it's unusual at 19 but not unheard of.

Irregular menstrual cycles are extremely unlikely to be cancer, and maybe they are theoretically normal for you if you say they run in the family.

I'd still see a doctor about it anyway

You're pregnant but the baby died a long time ago. Your uterus is digesting the baby, but your body still thinks you're pregnant.

It's probably PCOS. It's a manageable condition. Many women have it. Go see the doctor. No matter what it is, seeing a doctor sooner than later is your best bet.
