Depends. When I draw realistically, then I usually want a photo and stick to it. If it's something else, then maybe a couple references help, but I usually try not to rip them off and add my own twist to it. It really depends on how long you've been doing it and how intensive.

I don't usually copy the picture exactly but I need an idea of where i'm going with the drawing.
