By default, I have sympathy. It's a horrible situation and NOBODY deserves to get abused like that. There's also a lot you have to consider. "Just leaving someone" is not "just leaving" them, it's leaving your home and potentially your city to get away from them. That's a big lifestyle change not everyone can just afford to do at the drop of a hat. There's also the threats. If the abuser has beaten their partner down so much that they know threats will work, it gets the partner scared to leave for fear of their life.
That being said, I do pity some people who have options and choose to stay there, especially women who have the option of shelters for abuse victims.
I do think one instance of domestic violence should be enough. A man would only have to hit me ONCE, and that is absolutely it, we are done right that second.
