I have a gross skin problem ...

On my scalp, I have flaky itchy skin. It's called psoriasis and it's a disease of the immune system... That being said, it's making me really unhappy. There are always flakes on my shoulders and it looks like I have bad dandruff, but there's literally no cure for what I have. Here is my dilemma - I want short hair. like... SHORT hair. I want a buzz cut. I'm a girl, and this has been a dream of mine. I'm tired of hair and I'm tired of psoriasis... but I cant shave my head because my skin is so gross... people would think I'm dirty... what do I do?

And your comment was more than 2 years ago!
It's like digging up ancient ruins in Egypt or working in a museum.

My mother has this, it's caused through stress. There is some shampoo you can use that helps it.

I'm sorry and you're not alone! I have psoriasis on my scalp too. It makes me unhappy. My mom took me to a dermatologist and he gave me some sort or foam. I put it on my scalp everyday and in like a week it completely goes away. When I run out it comes back. I feel ashamed and unclean. And itchy, very, very itchy. But yeah I recommend seeing a dermatologist.

My mom has psoriasis and very short hair, she uses a special shampoo. When it was really bad, she did this treatment that involved leaving apple cider vinegar in her hair for an hour or so. She'd cover it up with a bandana, but it still smelled very strong!
Good luck, and chances are you're the one who notices it the most!

well sounds bad, but i would cut it, and not a buzz, that would be weird, even for somone without that problem, but shortish, and im sure you can gel ur hair in sum way, that it holds the flakes back, and i would shower a bit more often, it might help

You're a doctor but you don't understand the basic rules of the English language? Convincing...

i have no advice regarding your hair style. but my uncle has been dealing with psoriasis all his life and it got sharply better when he switched to a special diet. no white bread, and all kinds of crap like that. if you want to email me, i'll ask him the name of the diet he went on. its not drastic. mostly just typical healthy stuff i think. Hi there, same problem here male @ 24, try a lotion (not a ointment) with Betamethasone & Salicylic Acid. I use one such lotion twice a week & my scalp is completely cured. Ofcourse it not 100%% curable. It will return if I stop applying the lotion but twice a week for psorasis free life it too much! Also "I think" that medical or any shampooo don't actually work in this case. I am sam1985 @ isitnormal.

I have the same problem- a dermatologist may be able to recommend something nice. I found that the shorter my hair is, the less flakes I have- and shaving makes it go away almost 100%% (medicine takes care of the rest)- but I'm a guy, so shaved head is more acceptable.

    • If I didn't have a bf, I would shave my head... It's good to know I'm not alone, at least. It's so embarrassing because it looks like I'm unclean, but I shower daily and spend hours trying to make sure I'm not going to flake on someone.... Am I being overly self conscious?

Find a psoriasis help group, either in you local community or on the net or wherever. Nothing happening to you is new or unique. Get help from people who actually know a thing or two.
