I wouldn't trust a stylist just because they're "professional" if I were you. Some of them are just scissor happy nut jobs who will make you look a lot worse than you think you look now.
When I was 13, I had long, thick, wavy hair down to the middle of my back. It was healthy as I never needed to use any heat to style it. I went to a stylist before a modelling show I had and they chopped all my beautiful hair off. I had a shoulder length, thin layered style that couldn't even be decently tied up for school. The only way my hair looked decent was when I styled it with a straightener and that ruined my hair's condition.
I'm 19 and I am still trying to get my hair back to the way it was. I retouch the roots black every couple of months and use heat as little as possible, so beware of some stylists. Don't just trust them just because. I learned how to cut my own bangs and I'm pretty good at it now. Everyone asks me who my hair stylist is.
Anyway, I think you should just go with whatever you feel comfortable with. Whatever you feel will improve your looks, go with that. I wasn't very confident in my early teens either. Infact, since the 5th grade I had acne, a self esteem issue about my weight (I'm not even over weight) and I just didn't take an interest in make up, clothes, styling hair or anything else a girl should be interested in.
Today, I'm still not a girly girl but I'm girly enough to make myself look decent and feel confident. I learned how to apply make up, style my hair, and dress in a way that makes me feel confident. You need to find clothes that fit your body type, and make up that compliments your hair and skin colour.
I hate how I feel
