Gunner is actually an old German or Nordic name. It has nothing to do with guns and was probably around before guns were invented.
It’s also pretty common for some Europeans to use surnames like Duffy or Kennedy as a first name if that name is dying off in the family as an honorarium to that branch of the family tree.
