If you'd like and want hugs from your mom I can totally see how that would upset you and make you sad. It's possible she wasn't raised in an affectionate home either. If you're uncomfortable with bringing the subject up to your mom, how about just going up to her and randomly hugging her yourself? Since she wasn't very affectionate with you when you were a child she may think you'd be uncomfortable with it so she feels awkward about it.
