I gave at the office

when some pompous rock star with a messiah complex tells us to donate our money to a charity, without thinking about who we're giving our money to, we do it without a second thought.

but when a homeless person on the street in our town, who lost their house and family because a bank took their money and paid for the President's six-million $$$ annual bonus and then foreclosed on their mortgage, asks us for a dime for a cup of coffee, we tell them to go get a job.

is this normal?

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Man, I read "I gave at the office" and was expecting a better story. Sigh, I suppose I'll move on then.

  • I don't give my money to anyone for free. I work for my paycheck and I need it =)

  • Let ,e tell you something about fucking homeless people. They are homeless because they CHOOSE to be. Most of the time anyway. The vast majority do drugs and drink and therefore don't abide by the rules of shelters and halfway homes. There is the odd case where you get someone with a bad mental disorder, but in most cases, they're lying to you to get money for more drugs, or Boose.

  • sadly this is normal, in fact, its not normal to help him out. this is the world we live in.

  • Ok. First off, Pres. salary= $200k/yr. He & his wife pd taxes-$5.6M from stocks & book royalties.(If ur gonna gripe, gripe about facts) 2nd, I was homeless 4 almost a yr,(long story), I didn't stand on a corner & beg 4 $$. I did odd jobs/a few $$ here & there, & eventually got back on my feet(another lng story). Now, I have a 4 br house, an '09 car, & I'm raising 2 kids on my own(a few lng strys, got a lot of these). Pt is, I didn't give up, which is what homeless ppl do. They realized that if they beg, ppl will give them $$. Btw, most beggars aren't homeless. They make more $$/day than I do, $300/day sometimes,(beggars, nt me), so, I have no sympathy for them. I do have a soft spot for honesty. A couple of bums once asked for$$ to buy booze. I gave it to them. As 4 charities, that's about communities helping other communities. A hurricane/earthquake/etc. wipes out a city, in incurable/rare diseases cost $$$M's to research/treat, whole countries starving 'cause their gov't sucks. How does one pay for any of this? Ans.-charities. How do you get ppl to give? Ans-advertise. Not getting enough? Convince someone influential to endorse it. Hey! Celebs! Really, charities are a good thing. But, like anything else, someone is able to take advantage of you. Legit charities r registered w/the gov't. They have to report how they spend $$. So go to ur local city hall and ask for a list of charities. There's probably a website to. Any way, I tried to make this short, but I'm not to good at that. Oh well.

  • I would give a charity that helps them money. But I wouldn't want to contact them directly (it's a hygene thing)

  • I don't even care if the money goes towards booze- I'm not their mom. Whatever makes them happy.

  • Not normal but understandable. I mean Id certainly feel better about myself if I gave to a natural disaster relief fund then that bottle of wine I shared with that homeless guy last week. Worst blow job ever.

  • I'll give a couple bucks to someone having a rough time on the streets before I do for some big-timer

  • You want to live up to his expectations but when he's not around you feel no need to perform.

It's normal but it's best to be your own person and not the extension of another person's will.

  • A dime for coffee? You'd need 20 in my neighborhood.

There are a lot of transients near my office. They often ask for very specific amounts of change, always for the bus. Occasionally, I'll give them bus tickets. And I hate the mumblers who wait to ask you until after you pass by. Do they honestly think I'm going to turn around and ask them to repeat themselves? They come in all shades.

But I support Street Roots- at least it's a quasi-job, and reading material!

  • Because you can walk away from the panhandler but you have to see the people you work with every day so there's a different type of pressure there.

  • I give when I have it. My only problem is giving money to people who make up a big lie just to feed their addiction.

    • That's the exact thing that puts me off. I strung up a massive bill for comic relief this year but when it comes to people on the street, you literally don't know where your money is going.
