For a very long time, people accepted their intuitive belief that the world was flat, the sun circled the earth, and the stars were little holes in a huge sphere that surrounded the earth.
Intuition can be right, but very often it's based on prejudices, stupid stuff our parents told us when we were kids, and our tendency to turn random stuff that happens to us into universal rules.
