I think my sympathy for animals and humans in the same situation (and given the humans didn't do something terrible and deserve it, or they are mostly to blame themself) is pretty much equal. I actually value human lives above animals. But I do feel more sympathy for animals that suffer their whole life (like those in factory farming) than humans who experience something tragic once or from time to time, but still have better times to make up. To me that makes perfect sense also. Humans generally have much better rights than most animals too
