Before the youth counter-culture of the 1960s, people went straight from adolescence into adulthood in their late teens and early twenties. Nowadays the young have negotiated an unwritten social contract to spend most of their 20s wandering, soul-searching and house-sharing before they finally settle down and get a career going in their early to mid 30s. I did it because it was what everyone my age was doing. Nobody used to do it in times past, however. If you feel peer pressure to act this way but you have a plan of action, I would definitely take action. But there are UC Berkeley graduates out there right now who are working as pizza delivery drivers.
