Your sister was just being a sibling who liked to pick fights(normal). Your mom tried to handle the situation the best she could by not laying down punishment and further increasing the drama. In the end I think everyone's family is weird somehow and they feel out of place in some way.(I do anyways)
I would visit them though. You don't want to be distant. That won't make anything better. If its awkward or something happens then make something up and leave ASAP if you have to.
