It's normal to follow your preferences and do what makes you happy. The people around you sound like they are just trying to be what culture tells them to be, rather than being true to themselves. Many people spend their lives trying to fit a mold, be glad you are not one of those people. Unfortunately after being told so long that they are characterized by their skin color, the black culture has somewhat taken that to heart and it hasnt entirely broken out of that box yet.
