I don't use large vocabulary words when i talk to my parents because i

I feel like I'd come across as a pseudo intellectual.

Since the age of 12 and up I've actively avoided using any learned vocabulary words with my family. I sometimes inadvertently do it but IMMEDIATELY feel ashamed afterwards almost like I'm a fraud.

I don't know why I do this and I hate it. Is it normal?

You shouldn't put yourself down like that, you probably are smart. And you shouldn't feel ashamed for being smart, you should be proud of it.

First, you don't necessarily need to use your vast vocabulary in front of your parents assuming you don't have an intellectual discussion with them. Second, even if you use unintentionally, there is no harm in it. Nobody would judge you.

  • If you know what large fancy words means that’s a smarter step up from me. If my memory was better at remembering definitions it would save awkward conversations. Last week someone was asking me questions about my car then asked me if it was on rollback and I still have no idea wtf they were talking about. I said “what” then they didn’t even answer me just kinda walked away. Like dammit I gone done fucked this one up too. If you know what your saying and can use them it would definitely show me up. I feel like for me if you can talk intelligent it’s kinda impressive.

I have a friend who loves to sound like a genius, by using vague technical terms (often without knowing how to use them) and exo-speak...

I met up with him on Thursday, I was changing my tires, putting summer tires on the E420 and guy goes "Remember to properly and procedurally increase the rotational dynamic force on the primary rotary driver to it's pre-designed torque threshold"

Then I threw a lug nut at the guy and said "You mean tighten the lug nuts right?" Guy drives a Fiat Multipla...

He's a dork, but I've known him since kindergarten and when I get him drunk at the pub hilarity always follows. Idiot got so drunk he tried the pull the tablecloth from the table with stuff on it trick. Saying knowing proper physics helps and he broke every single thing on the table. The waitress was furious XD

Can't wait to take the guy out drinking again this summer...

Never be ashamed to express yourself. Your words are an expression of who you are through speech, and to hide words from a specific group is to hide a piece of yourself. If you feel that they don't understand a particular word, ask them if they are following. The best way to know what someone thinks or feels is to simply ask. You can't read minds.

Are your parents uneducated, but judgemental, and easily offended people? I just speak how I speak for the most part.

If I suspect that the people with whom I'm conversing may be less likely to understand me I might choose to be less illustrious in my choice of vocabulary, and speak in more general terms. I would do this, because I would want to be understood, not because I feel guilty, or ashamed of who I am.

That is so unneccacary mate! I actually used to nake a point of trying to utilize colossal conjuctions in my extravagantly coherent dicussions with them. Probably not a huge deal though mate, don't worry about it

I have a speech impediment so stay away from words that I dont know for 100% certainty that I wount mess up. Brewery is one of those words, I perfer distillery. Writing wise I use a larger vocabulary base.
