I have been trying to think of that and have not thought of any examples. It seems if someone were to change what they thought, they didnt actually think it in the first place.
A lot of people ( myself at times admittedly ) have certain opinions that maybe aren't the best informed, maybe not researched all that well or even biased, they may have an experience involving something to do with that opinion which puts it into context
Also we change, no one, not one single person will exit this world as the exact same person they were when they were a kid, life happens to us, we experience new things all the time which can open our eyes, it can be a change in morals or taste
I despised hip hop and jazz as a teenager, I thought hip hop was a waste of time, talentless borderline rapist chavs talking over shit instrumentals and I thought jazz was pseudo sophisticated bullshit, now I'm a massive hip hop fan and I listen to quite a few jazz artists, hell in was forced to listen to pink Floyd as a kid and hated it, one of my favourite bands now, it doesn't mean I was lying before, I genuinely thought these things, I've just changed since then.
You've never had a change of circumstances and had to change your stance/opinion/previous course of action on something?
Take my work situation. I told my clients I would work with them until the end of this year and into the foreseeable future. Some stuff has come up and instead I need to finish with them in May and move interstate.
In January, when we made this agreement, I had no clue this would happen. I had no intenyion of moving. So was I lying then?
I cannot think of any if there was. I make sure to never promise anything because something might happen otherwise. I do feel lied to when someone changes what they said.
I think people generally accept that situations and beliefs change, and that "lying" is only when someone has an intent to mislead/misinform. Change of mind is not an intent to mislead/misinform.
And I think that generally, people consider "promises" to be "within the best of my abilities, I will do this". Unforseen circumstances out of your own control really don't constitute a lie.
I honestly don't know if I'll explain this in a way that makes sense to you. Not trying to be rude about it, I just don't think you view this as most people do.
I might interpet those things more literally than most people. It does make me skeptical of anything someone may say because I do not know if it will change.
It seems that way, yes. Aspie trait etc. I can understand why you would be sceptical in light of that line of thinking. Unfortunately, it is mostly unlikely to be people's intent.
Well said, I think you're pretty much right on. There's always what I like to call exceptions to the rule. Life is unpredictable. "Stuff comes up", which can change a situation completely.
I wasn't saying anything about you making exceptions for yourself. If that is what you took away then you missed the point.
You said that you couldn't think of an example of a time that you changed your mind. I was giving you a common example of changing ones mind which I thought might apply to you, and based on your response, it does.
From there, you need to decide if you feel you were lying when you believed in Santa Clause, or just incorrect because you were relying on false information. If you were just incorrect, than that would be a time when you changed your mind about something, but never lied with your original belief.
You do make a good point.
I would say I have had incorrect ideas due to being lied to.
Still if I were to have told others my incorrect ideas, it would still technically be a lie.
I don't see any difference between lying and changing your mind.

Ok let me rephrase somewhat.

Also if I did I was lying too. I am not trying to excuse myself from this rule.

Did you believe in Santa Clause as a child?

If your argument is he doesn't exist than save it. I have pictures with him from when I was a kid, and that can't be faked.

Hmmm, he looks slightly different from my pics. Probably age I would think.
Yes but I only thought that because I was lied to. It wasnt my own opinion.

Just because you form an opinion based on lies, doesn't make it not yours.
You had an opinion, you realized it was based on false information, and you changed it.
That doesn't mean you were lying yourself.
