You would be surprised at how many naive people think that. It's probably because they like to feel superior in a bid to conceal their own insecurities.
It isn't just Y!A either. Go to practically any discussion forum and this will occur, and some of the most uprated posts will be saying stuff like how if someone is an atheist they are automatically Einstein-level geniuses. The way they will talk would make Richard Dawkins sound like Mother Teresa.
