I don't know if i'm an alcoholic?

I really don't know if I'm an alcoholic or it's just an alcohol problem. Is it normal to question myself and not understand if I have a problem that is more significant than I may realize? I tell myself that I don't have a problem but deep inside I know there's something going on. THere's a part of me saying that I may have an addiction problem but the other side just denies it. Is this normal?

  • Almost all of us are in denial about one thing or another, so that would be perfectly normal.

Various people define alcoholism in various terms, but it seems to me that the main question you need to ask yourself is whether your alcohol use/abuse is messing up your life in any way.

Unless you're an elite-level sponger, your drinking has to be having an impact on the state of your finances; only you can decide if that impact is significant in terms of lost opportunities to spend the money on other things. You might perform a little thought experiment: imagine that your doctor has told you that if you ever even taste anything alcoholic again, you're going to die in agony within a few minutes. If the thought of going teetotal for the rest of your life fills you with despair, then I'd suggest that you definitely have a problem with alcohol. Whether or not that fits some clinical definition of alcoholism is irrelevant; booze has clearly become a huge part of your life, and it's never a positive thing to focus so much on the consumption of any drug that affects our perception of reality.
