Unless you've grown up with the guy (either from childhood or throughout highschool), making friends with men in their late teens and early 20s or in general are extremely difficult. Most of the time, men mainly approach women for sexual/romantic reasons.
As for friendships with women, that's difficult too since a lot of them are competitive, and often times don't talk about anything worthwhile. So it's hit and miss. You may eventually meet a cool laidback girl.
