  • News flash: you were a teenager last year. Saying the memories "still" haunt you is a little melodramatic, isn't it? Most people I know DID NOT go all the way in high school. Yes, most of us were in "relationships" but that mostly consisted of making out at the movies and holding sweaty hands. It was pretty much as far from love as you can get. Like you mentioned, teens often (perhaps always) mistake arousal or infatuation with love/care. People thought everybody was getting some, because everybody lied. The truth only comes out later when people mature, but don't take my word for it. Just look at your normal percentage.

In high school, if you were a guy and admitted to being a virgin, you were automatically a loser. So nobody admitted to it. It was the opposite for girls. If a girl was even suspected of having had sex she was labelled a slut or a whore. Even wearing short skirts made you a skank. It's a double standard. People deal and trade in jealousy, superiority, and lies in high school. It's just the way it'll always be.

Feeling sorry for yourself for your lack-lustre adolescence is such a cop out. You want to know what a bad teenage life is? I had a friend who was beaten by his dad almost daily. A guy in my school I didn't know had cancer all throughout his teens and died before he could even graduate. People have it WAY worse than you did. You might have even had a better than average adolescence if you weren't bullied, teased, or excluded on a daily basis like a lot of people are. It's normal to hit twenty and have your regrets; usually things you didn't do, but you're young. You have the chance to have an amazing life, so start NOW before something gets in your way; something beyond your control and bigger than your own trepidation.

You need to just let go of the past now. Trust me, if you don't, at 25 you'll be looking back again wishing you'd done ____ at 20. Consider this a push.

      • Twenty was like yesterday for me. There's a lot of pressure because you're supposed to be so happy at twenty. Pop culture has presented twenty as the "perfect" age to be. You're supposed to be at your peak in every way, but now that people are living much longer lives, people are reaching emotional maturity at a later age. We're still really just kids at twenty now. My mom told me that she only really matured at twenty-seven, and she noticed my dad did at about thirty-six. You have time to figure things out, but while you do so, enjoy your life and do the things you want to do, because you don't know what tomorrow will bring.

    • I can't think of anything more horrible than being on your death bed, regretting all the things one didn't do. Everyone should get off their asses and just ask the girl out, buy that car, take that trip, or whatever, but do something and not be afraid to try.
