Frankly I got no idea. But if this were to help, I get the same "peaceful" feeling to a lesser extent when I pet a cat or watch doves wandering around innocently. I am not sure, it might be both. I never thought of distinguishing both things apart.
But I don't show my pet tendencies when I am around my mother. I am not sure why. Oh, and if that helps, I only see my mother a few weeks in a year. I live in another part of the world.
Let me ask you this, would you during sexual activity request your partner play the role of a caregiver? If so then I'd say this is a sexual thing. After reading your response though I get the feeling that this is also a lifestyle thing. You should look into the story on "My Strange Addiction: My Girlfriend Lives As A Toddler". While they don't take the child x caregiver thing into the bedroom, they do live out most of their lives in that role.
You're simply different. That's not necessarily bad. So long as you're not bringing harm to others and do what you will around consenting adults then you're far from the scum of society. I'd be careful who you share this part of yourself with. Society has a bad tendency to judge those who're different.
I desperately want affection as if I am a pet or a baby

I never had sex so I don't know for sure, but I am starting to understand it is also a sexual thing. I am sure it is a lifestyle thing too. I'm weird.
