I am 18 and have problems washing my hair.

No matter what I do, there always seems to be dandruff in my hair, mostly on my scalp. I've used many different shampoos and conditioners, specifically for dandruff and also not. I wash my hair every other day.
As I am going to college in the fall, I really do not want to have dandruff in my hair all the time. I'd like to be able to fix it.
I would like to know if this seems normal and if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix my problem.

Im not sure about you, but i have ethnic hair and its really hard to find the right stuff. I thought I had dandruff until one day I washed it with Dove shampoo (it stripped a lot of essential oils out of my hair) BUT, the dandruff was gone. And i realized, it wasn't dandruff at all, it was actually build up and residue from my conditioners. They moisturized my hair to the point where it began to build up. So if you know for sure its not build up from all those conditioners, I recommend seeing a dermatologist

dandruff doesnt always mean psorisis or eczema. i used to have a itchy dry scalp with dandruff (hairspray abuse lol) and my doc gave me a prescription for a medicated moose called Luxiq. u put it on ur scalp after you wash your hair. I was cured from the very first use! now i get to use whatever shampoo i want and dont have to ditch the hairspray. (btw you wash your hair too often, ur drying ur scalp and hair even more. 1-2 times a week max!)

Nizoral works. My husband has dermatitis and it works great. I'm not sure if it is only available in Canada, or if you can find it where ever you are. It's rather expensive, but it works.

I had the same issue when I was 9-13 years old. I tried everything!!!! It sounds really stupid but what my problem was was actually not rinsing my hair well enough. Like my mom never taught me how to wash my hair. She said I would always need dandruff shampoo but now I don't use it all and no dandruff. Just make sure you wash your hair thoroughly rub the shampoo into your scalp and then rinse very well. Then use conditioner. I don't rub it into my scalp just on the hair. Then I rinse really well.

Yeah it's pretty normal. I tend to get a lot of dandruff as well. You've probably already tried this but I use Head and Shoulders shampoo because it's anti-dandruff. It usually works for me. If you use the dry scalp care one it might help.

  • Sounds like psoriasis.
The fastest treatment for that is a steroid lotion prescribed by a doctor.
If you can't get to a doctor, then ask your pharmacist for some steroid lotion or shampoo options - they won't be as strong as what your doctor can prescribe, but they might be enough to do the trick too.

    This is a fixable thing.

I've spoken to a friend who had a problem a lot like yours, he did say he was warned by his doctor, if you use a dandruff shampoo, and you switch to a new one every few days or so out, it can make the problem worse. What you'll want to do is fine one and stick with it. Failing that, you'll want to check with a doctor.

Try using a good shampoo (not sure which) and comb your hair afterwards.

What you need is loprox shampoo. It's not a cure, but it works.

You should see a dermatologist. This could be eczema or psoriasis as stated above, but this could also be an allergy to the shampoos/creme rinses, or even your tap water. Most tap water has chlorine in it which is very drying to the skin and scalp. Also, most shampoos & creme rinses have alcohol, perfumes, etc. in them which is also very drying and very aggitating to some people's skin. I am very allergic to hair spray, most shampoos, creme rinses, soaps, perfumes, lotions, etc., so this could be a possibility for you as well.

You may need to see a dermatologist. You may have psoriasis or eczema and treatment for that does not come from Wal-mart or Sally. Also, if you take hot showers they will dry your scalp, so try luke warm while shampooing and cool while rinsing conditioner. Good Luck!
