  • I’m a “she” btw, but yeah I don’t think I’m going to a shrink any time soon. I want other options to deal with these thoughts with first, but thanks.

    • Sorry, I'm usually careful about gender pronouns!

Can I suggest you get hold of a book called "Man's (for which read Woman and Man's!) Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl - if your local library or school library doesn't have it, they should.

It's got me through some very bad times: I figure if a man who survived Nazi death camps and lost his immediate family there can find a meaning in life, anyone can.

There's also the easy mental practice of making a list, either in your head or better still, in writing so you can refer to it later, of the things you feel gratitude for: roof over your head, food, clean water, whatever.

Good luck! I'm one of the oldies you fear to be (73 in 3 days) and I can recommend getting your head together about this before you get much older, then you will have time to find things you enjoy in life.

I'm surprised you're feeling all this if you believe in god (I don't, by the way): surely the whole point of such belief systems is to give meaning to life?

      • Thank you for the tip! I’ve actually gotten so much better lately. I’m living with some girls in another country that I didn’t know before we moved in together. (It’s like a work&travel thing) I find people and psychology so interesting! Human interaction and how people react differently to situations is really fascinating to me. I’ve already gotten really close to the girls and talked lots about existential crisis, bad family situations and so on.

So if anyone is wondering, I’n actually kinda happy again! If the person who’s reading this is feeling trapped or tired of living, just say “fuck it” and do something yolo like moving to another country! Take care of yourselves.

        • Glad to hear you're feeling so much happier but get the book anyway if you can and keep it for emergencies! My copy is by my bed and even just glancing at it there helps me because I've read it so many times I know what the writer's message is.

I often think of my favourite quote from the book, which is (paraphrased) that there's one choice no-one can take away from you and that's to choose how you respond to whatever circumstances you find yourself in.
