How would you react when “a stranger comes a knocking”?

I’m just saying, it happened about 3am last night. Person just started pounding on my apartment door out of the blue? Didn’t say who they were or anything? If it was the police, don’t the police have to say “This is the Police. Open up?” Police can’t just try and break into your house or anything right?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

    I just wouldn't answer.

Me neither, I don’t even answer unexpected knocks during the day thanks to experiences with annoying beggars and weirdly aggressive charity collectors.

I would be completely scared to a point that I would curve myself in a ball.

Was there a brown bag burning on the front porch.

Pranksters used to go around all kind of late hours and knock on doors pulling all kind of stupid pranks.

I have had this happen to me twice.

Both times I investigated holding a pistol in my right hand (held alongside my head pointed up, finger not on the trigger).

1st case was some drunk/drugged person who was already walking away from the door when I looked out the door window.

2nd case was the police, who stopped to tell me about down tree that took down the power lines to the house (which were still live so I still had power). The police officer said he appreciated the way I held my pistol to investigate and unusual knocking or noise.

I spent the day getting the tree cut down and a new electrical service to my house. Interesting day.

The old electric meter in my basement stopped with the numbers 666 on it (It was from the 1950's and only showed 3 digits: True story - I have pictures).

My new electric service has the electric meter on the side of the house, and has I believe 5 digits (without looking).

Were you blasting music? Were you partying? Is there any likely reason for police or people you know showing up at 3am? If it was a quiet night and there is no reason for anyone to be coming around, I would make my boyfriend answer. If it was just me I would arm myself with a firearm and insist whoever was knocking identify themselves and their business.

If the cops are looking for someone and they know where the person usually spends their nights, it's not unusual for them to swoop in the very early hours of the morning. But I find it hard to believe that any police force would have a policy of pounding on a door without identifying themselves and then just leave if nobody answers. Even in the UK where the cops are much more low-key than American police, if they want to arrest someone in a pre-dawn raid, they take a battering ram with them to break down the door if it isn't opened.

As a wild ass guess, my money would be on your early-hours door-pounder being someone who was drunk or drugged out of their (most likely, his) head, and confused your apartment with another in the building. Maybe the one on the floor above or below yours.

Thats not normal at all. Could have been police but I doubt they'd go at 3am without a warrant just to wake up everyone around your apartment by knocking so loud. Its more likely if they had questions for you they'd come at a more appropriate time.

That would freak the hell out of me. Maybe look into getting a gun.
