About your situation you just have to keep dating putting yourself out there, men are idiots. And I’ll bet your friend is right he will realise what he’s lost when he starts dating new people or when time has passed men need time and a lot of it sometimes to realise what they had. And if he does come back around then you must’ve meant something to him. If he doesn’t then it wasn’t meant to be.
However he won’t come back around while you’re still thinking about him. It just won’t happen. Try to keep moving forward.
