Unless they give you the opportunity to tell them (for example, if they ask what boy you have a crush on, but you have a girl crush), why just up and tell them one day? I've always been confused about why people think their sexuality is something necessary to announce to everyone. To encourage acceptance and help people realize that not being straight is okay? To have others help reassure you it's okay? Assuming you live in a developed country, that stuff happened a while ago. Anyone who still harbors such outdated views is beyond saving. And you're well aware it's okay.
I get what you're saying, but she feels it's a big part of who she is and she wants the people close to her to know that about her that she feels is important. Plus it still can be scary given how recently homophobia was the norm in society.
