I can't believe this got thumbed down twice. I do this too and couldn't imagine not doing it. Most the gross stuff gets on the tongue and I can taste it. I just use an old spoon to do this.
I'm guessing they thumbed him down because he didn't answer the OP's question about brushing teeth giving them the impression that he only cleans his tongue and not his teeth.

I use a tongue scraper to get bad breath bacteria in the back of my throat. Then I brush my tongue. Otherwise, bad breath is nasty.

Tongue scrapers work better and are easily worth the $3 price.
