How often do you accurately intuit/sense a situation?

Thoughts?

I recently applied to a job I had been thinking about working for a while. I had eaten there a couple times and I just had gotten the sense this one employee was the head person in charge without ever actually being told so or any obvious namebadge or difference in uniform. Sure enough, when I went to inquire about a job, he was the manager.

I’m one of those people I think I don’t trust or realize what I’m sensing in the moment. It can kind of come across mentally as reflections or observations on the situation, which then later turn out to be right.

Unfortunately I don’t trust some of these because some of them are bothersome at times. And I also simply don’t want to believe I’m that accurate at times, because I don’t want to spiral down some path where I think I’m practically psychic or mind-reading, because those are cognitive distortions/delusions at times as well.

I’m just wondering if I should just trust them more. The problem is I also have a observations about people at times that are wrong or presumption, which throws things off. Is there a way to tell the difference

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

    • What’s it feel like to read people though? Does it just come across as an observation or train of thoughts? Or more of a judgey feeling as you assess them?

      • Kinda like how it feels before you do something you aren't supposed to Its just a feeling man

  • It's been the case for me many times. It's also been inaccurate at times and based on a subconscious fear. But many times quite accurate.

  • There are certain things the subconscious picks up on. In the case of you having a feeling the manager was someone in charge before ever knowing for sure, like Lloyd said, it can be in the way they carry themselves and the way others respond to them.

Often if I get a bad feeling about someone, it's correct. I still tend to give people the benefit of the doubt within reason (for example, if I get a feeling someone is dangerous or otherwise really bad news, I'll avoid them), but tread cautiously (don't trust them) and am nearly always right about them. I remember a friend of mine had a boyfriend she had just introduced to me that day, and I couldn't shake the feeling that something was really off about him and there was something I really didn't like about him. I remember thinking, "He hasn't even done anything to justify these feelings towards him, so maybe I need to just give him a chance", but he ended up being a really unstable, abusive and controlling, and dangerous guy who was nothing but trouble.

sweetone89 is right, always trust your gut feeling. I definitely get what you're saying about it not being very clear sometimes, but I feel like it's hard to miss when it's a true gut feeling. The rest is likely anxiety.

  • It's quite easy to judge peoples place in the hierarchy by their posturing and other peoples reactions to them.

Remember we were animals, pack animals at that. Picking out who is in charge by a glance was an important non verbal communication device.

  • There is a saying, always trust your gut feelings about a situation.

    • I’ve had a few times I think where something didn’t feel right or add up, or there was something about the situation ‘I didn’t like’, in a deeper way.

But it’s all those other situations in life, if there’s any gut feelings I swear they just blur into background noise for me. Too much anxiety, uncertainty, etc.
