I just asked by mum and dad, and they normally bought me about 8 things, apparently. It always felt like a lot more to me. I don't think it really matters, it depends on what it is, and if it something that they really want. Tbh, I doubt that the 4 y/o is old enough to care that much, so just a couple of items would be fine there.
To elaborate, as I got older I got less and less presents. Ever since I was about 11 I'd expect only 1 or 2 things that I really wanted and were actually useful, a mobile phone or a guitar, for example.
