How long in a relationship do you consider it to be long term?

  • I'd say around 1 year is long term, but I'm younger than most people here so 1 year is quite a large percentage of my life.

I had an idea that a "long term relationship" could be equal to a certain percentage of your own age. I sat down with my calculator and tried to work out what a good percentage would be, but I can't really. I think there are too many factors; how long your previous relationships have lasted (if there were any), how fast your relationship has moved on (have you had sex, do you live together, are you married et cetera et cetera), what your expectations are/were... a relationship can be long term for one person and not for another.

Words like "long term" often come with baggage like "serious" and "committed". While those often go together, there's no reason to presume they mean the same thing. I think a lot of people would tend to think (consciously or otherwise) about how serious and committed their relationship felt as opposed to how long it had lasted if they're judging how long term it is.
