Here's a tip: When its silent in a room, just say "well this is awkward" and bam, the situation is now awkward

I think if you said something weird, like this:

You:...- end then he says I am a JERK!
      person #1 - Oh gosh
      person #2 - Really?
      person #3 - lol

      *awkward silence.

You: <_<... ... and boom goes the dynamite.

      persons - wtf? lol

person #2 - What do you mean with that?

You: -_- a dynamite blows and makes BOOM, it's natural.

person #2 - Okey... ... UH! I went to shopping last night and...

And if you use this on any silence, it makes people say, WHAT? and laugh. because when you interrupt a silence like that, it holds the conversation wile they are laughing, thinking what to say next.

Depends on the person. There are people in whose silence I am wholly comfortable. I talk a lot but I like it when there's a connection with someone and you can communicate with just looks.

it depends on the situation. On the phone it gets awkward straight away. If you're walking with someone or you're in a busy place, it's not that bad. Face to face in a quiet place it would take less than half a minute.

Any amount of silence can be awkward for people who aren't comfortable having silence between them. My friend and I can sit down for 20 minutes and not really say anything and it isn't awkward, but if I am at a party I feel awkward for not talking to anyone- is that an awkward silence? "Awkward silences" occur because you feel awkward, and to say that there is a specific time for when you feel awkward you need to get more acquainted with people because than you don't feel comfortable with them.

if your laying there next to someone and ur finger is in her butthole the silence might not get too akward.

Its an awkward silence if someone looks uncomfortable because its quiet, no matter the time lapse.

It depends on it I know the person very well and feel comfortable with him/her. If I do so, it can take 5 minutes, But it's not awkward, it's just ..peace or something.
But If I don't know the person it can take 5 sec.

  • I am a person who deeply believes in freedom of expression.I never run out of topic. But there are times that I would rather be left alone in total silence than to have a series of meaningless chatter.Yet,I guess it will be so awkward to have a quarter of an hour in total deafening silence.

I talk a lot, so silences usually are awkward. But I guess it's because the other person is trying to figure out how to reply to whatever I had just said.
If all else fails, do the 'awkward turtle'.

It really depends. On the phone, it's immediate (I HATE being on the phone....). In person, I don't find it all to awkward to have even long bouts of silence. I like to be around people who have more quality things to say rather than quantity. Plus there's something to be said about understanding what people around you are thinking/feeling without actually SAYING anything. I'd rather see my friends observing things quietly rather than gossiping or talking total nonsense all the time.

  • This is actually a really funny question...I don't feel awkward in silence at all, but it is funny watching other people squirm!

I used to be friends with a real bitch. When my nephew (17) was killed in a motorbike accident 5 years ago, it took me quite a while to go out again. The first night I arrived in the pub she said, "Before you start, we're not going to talk about anything sad." She immediately reminded me about it so I withdrew. The silence must've lasted half an hour! Her favourite topic is herself but as she used to rely on me to be the entertainment - I left it to her that night!

She found out that night that she had no personality worth talking about - and I've never bothered with her since.

Depends on the topic of conversation.

If the conversation just suddenly ended, then I feel awkward after about 10 seconds.

However, if the topic was "finished", it can be followed by a longer silence (a few minutes).
