I think that looks are the attractant. After you are dating, they become much less important to the relationship. I don't think any relationship can survive on looks alone.
Interestingly, my present wife is as far from my "type" as a woman could possibly be, yet it's probably the best relationship I've ever been in. Not that she isn't attractive, it's just that she is nothing like any other girl I've dated since college. We met through a friend and spent a whole night sitting in the cockpit talking, and we've basically not been apart since that night. We just clicked and looks had little to do with this relationship.
