  • My older (and only) sibling did this last year, it's tragic and leaves the people close to them with a mountain of guilt, thinking that they should have seen it coming. The shoulda, coulda, wouldas eat you up, and watching the pain of other family is even worse. The person that took his/her life is missing so much.

They're not losers, nor are they stupid, they are just in pain. It's not so much that they don't want to live anymore, it's just that they want the pain to stop.

    • I'm sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry for the amount of pain your sibling must have been in to take this action.

Unfortunately for some perfectly physically healthy people, life and interactions with other people are not fulfilling at all, perhaps even painful. It's this and many other factors that ultimately make someone do this. In my experience its the most sensitive of people that tend towards depression and/or suicide.

  • If someone I knew did want to kill themselves I'd like to try and help them. If it's someone I don't know too well, I'd still like to be able to help.

    • Help them kill themselves? Or help them to want to live?

      • That's an interesting way to take it. But no, I actually want to help them live. Even if you don't see a point to live I can name multiple reasons why. I don't want others to reach that point though, where they are actually considering suicide.

  • The majority of the time, it depresses me - but it's a personal choice.

Ultimately it reminds me that sometimes we're our own worst enemies, and that emotional pain can be as intolerable as physical pain, but often far more difficult to treat.

  • I don't know how people do it. But we are all individual, if someone gets to the point where they don't want to live for whatever reasons then it's their choice as long as they don't take other people with them.
I can't imagine what some go through, depression ect.. That make people feel they can't live anymore.

  • Suicide is a tragically permanent solution to a temporary problem.

  • One of my best childhood friends did this a couple years ago. His suicide had a seriously negative impact on a lot of people.
I think if he were still here he would be glad he didn't do it. He was very impulsive. Also he never threatened suicide or any other attention seeking behavior that some people do who never actually do it.
Usually when people feel like ending their life it goes away but it's also true that some peoples lives never do get better. Sadly life is out to get some people but even in those cases sometimes people can use their experiences of misfortune to help others in the same situations.

  • I feel generally sad for a lost life, yet morbidly fascinated. I have not had anyone close to me commit suicide (just one distant acquaintance)and all I could think about was what made them do it. Why. How. Did they leave a letter? I want to read it. What did they feel? This sounds a little more screwed up when it is written out.

  • It makes you feel dead inside... and outside.

    • No feeling at all in death. You can poke em and prod em, burn em and flay em, and nary hear a peep of complaint.

      • I think I get your point. I don't know why you were thumbed down, though. Maybe you were too graphic?

        • There are a few, it seems, who thumb me down without even reading my comments. It doesn't matter if I'm being nice or critical. They may be very jealous that I have a great life and they are losers, or they are children just playing. Anyway, I've stopped looking at the thumbs because they no longer have any real meaning on my posts. I'm pretty sure they are the same losers who have been banned from the site and they can needlessly thumb down those they dislike and not get banned.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
      • I don't get why you were thumbs down either. I thought that it was well understood that "dead" things are no longer capable of feeling and responding to pain.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Honestly? I looked down on it, but due to certain feelings, I can understand it.

  • For those who say anyone who has committed suicide cannot post - I suppose at the most basic level that's true but you forget about those who have done the deed and survived. So from that perspective (someone who did, ended up in the ICU, and quote-on-quote lived through suicide) I wanted to give my thoughts on the matter.

First off, it's not weak or cowardly. I have experienced my share of physical pain and emotional pain and I would take the worst physical pain ANY day over the feelings that I experienced (and still experience sometimes) when suicidal. To those of you who 'understand' and 'agree with it' when it's a terminal illness but not mental illness - you obviously have no idea the torture of mental illness. You have no idea what the people around you are going through - even ones that appear totally fine. All through my struggles (with the exception of when I was in ICU) I worked as a nurse and was considered one of the best on my unit. There is so much more struggle and illness inside people than you can realize by passing your judgment without having experienced it.

Thank you to the people who understand that sometimes it's not a temporary problem. Sometimes it's a chronic, lifelong, debilitating illness that even through years of medication trials and therapy cannot be "cured" for some people. As for the original question...none of those choices are how I feel about suicide. It's sad. It's tragic. Sometimes it's necessary. It's something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Please don't promote the stereotypes by judging us as weak, cowardly, or bowing out too quickly when you haven't walked a mile (or twenty) in our shoes.

  • ...If you committed suicide already, how would you be able to comment? :P

Suicide? My sister tried to do it once. I can't let her near scissors or anything that can choke her... The only thing I can do is keep her to a positive side.

  • I believe it should be legal and destimatized.

That said, I believe there should be an evaluation process, if a person feels suicidal and is of sound mind and body, they should be permitted to take their life. I would suggest a time period between the initial decision and the execution.

There are people who do not want to live anymore, if they are mentally healthy they should be permitted to depart. Nobody has a right to stop them.

Just maybe, if they can explain it to their family without causing stigma and panic, then it will be more pleasant for all involved than driving into a pole.

  • I don't think suicide is ever selfish but it really depends on what their situation is. If they have a serious medical condition that is incredibly painful to deal with every day and they're basically a walking vegetable, I understand and respect it.

  • I don't know, I've never done it.

Also, I don't think anyone else here has either. The dead can't type.

  • If someone is selfish enuf to do it in the first place then it was nice knowing you

  • I think suicide is saddening. It is sad when a life is experienced as so unpleasant and hopeless.

Generally, I do not have disrespect for suicide as a choice.

  • Hospice is suicide by dehydration. I'd help a dying loved one with that.

  • To be completely honest, if it's a person I don't know, I just wouldn't care. If its someone I do care about, I'd do whatever I can to help him or her.

  • You know what.. Screw the people who call people who took their own life for "COWARDS".... Or label them as the people who gave up too easily/cheated his or her way out...

The balls of STEEL one must have before hanging himself, heck.. Before jumping from a tall building or a bridge.. Knowing that it will be the end.

Still, suicide is never right ever.. And should be prevented at all given times.. After watching the Documentary "The Bridge" i started thinking that these people, yes they might have fully planned that enough is enough and this is it but STILL.. The condition or state they are in is not something you can't help, you can help that person..

Sad part though, i guess people plan the "Suicide" in most cases.. And the relief they must feel knowing that they can make a quick escape... No one around notices, they might even be in a jumpy mood!

It gets even more freaky, the terrible cases of students who have gotten bullied to the point of no turning back... Mentally ill people, kids with abusive parents that goes through with suicide is horribly sad... But on the other side you have people who had it all, but for SOME reason... SOME reason they decide to end it, that's incredibly freaky imo....

If you are suicidal PLEASE get help!

  • I believe that some people are born to eventually kill themselves, some people just don't like life.

  • I wonder what the people of IIN would think if i wanted to kill myself.
