I only use three fingers to hold my pen. My ring finger and pinky don't come into play. I'm also very picky about my pen. I like fine points, or ultra-fine point pens. And they need to be gel or roller ball. I like smooth flowing ink. If it isn't, I feel like my writing looks like crap.

Sometimes my hand hurts when I write. I usually find that I am unconsciously holding on to the pen very tightly. Relax.

We still learn to write with fountain pens and it's therefore taught to write using 3 fingers to hold the pen, with the ring finger and pinkie being curled in and out of the way.

I use this pen at work for almost a year and it has helped me considerably.

Very neat! Now add some squishy gel, and that's the world's most comfortable pen.

Most of the time I hold a pen with my thumb at the side of the pen, and my middle and index finger close together at the top, near the thumb obviously. The pen rests on my ring finger whilst I'm writing. So basically, two fingers on the top of the pen, thumb at the side and two fingers at the bottom of the pen. Not sure if I've described that in a way which makes sense.

    • I just woke up so it all sounded like garblegarble haha. I think I get it now so it lays against your ring finger, index and middle at top...pinky doesn't touch the pen?

I asked for a few reasons. I have messy handwriting, it's seriously the worst anyone has ever seen. I think someone noticed how I held a pen and said I wrote weird so I asked people and they said they rest the pen on their middle finger not ring. And lastly my hand always hurts when I write and I'm not sure if it's because I'm holding it wrong, but one thing I noticed is because I've been holding it that way my entire life I can't do the Vulcan Salute with my writing hand. :(

      Me too!

      We're doing it wrong :(

It was hard for me to teach a kid how to hold it properly when I don't either unless I really think about it. Though his grip was the weirdest I've ever seen. He somehow managed all fingers on at once, and pointer finger held waaay back above the rest. I tried it and felt like I broke my hand. No wonder this kid had problems at school :-S

Ouch, that sounds like a painful way to hold a pen.D: And yeah, I've been told that I hold pens weirdly. Same with cutlery. Ah well, it's hardly important.:P

I support mine on my ring finger, with my index and middle fingers on top, and thumb on the side. I get comments on how it is the wrong way to hold it but it works and is comfortable. I don't think there is a wrong way. The theory that it has to be done one specific way to be "correct" makes me think of how they used to force left handed children to use their right hands in school.

I've been told I hold it really weird. I mean I didn't think writing with your toes was a big deal at all

With my right hand held by my index finger and middle finger (between the two) supporting the tip with my thumb. I curve my wrist the same way that people who write with their left hand curve their wrist as I was originally left handed and was made to write with my right hand but never taught to do it properly.

As a result, my handwriting is small enough to freak people out when they see it (and they make sure I know it), it's fairly neat and looks like a combination of print and cursive and when in pencil, is very dark because I put a lot of pressure on my writing utensils.

I have a giant callus on my ring finger from writing. It's a really noticeable bump. I'm left handed so and I hold my pen really weird. I remember I had to use special pencil grips in elementary school because my teachers wanted to fix it. It definitely didn't work.

With my middle finger. I had to find a pen and write a few words to find out for you :P I've never thought about it before, but I can't imagine writing with your ring finger is a detriment to handwriting. I just find it easier to use my thumb, middle and index fingers.

I use my ring finger. I was never taught the 'right' way to write until 5th grade. By then it was much too late for me to change styles.
