DO NOT try to get evidence first. It'll just piss them off. If you're suspicious, you've got SOME reason and SOME proof. Be sensitive, explain why you're suspicious. Be the confidante, and he or she might just open up to you. You might not be able to tell anybody else, but you know. And you can hang the fact that you know and they don't over their heads, if you like that sort of thing (though I wouldn't, it's too tempting and my friends trust me too much).
