Nah, that's a myth based on people with a little information, or those who don't think it's healthy to do so, so will just lie about the facts. Your body will certainly try and put on fat reserves again, but one of the basic laws of physics is that energy can't be created or destroyed. If you don't take in energy for let's say a week but you still expend it then it's impossible to put the weight back on with the less cumulative energy you would have taken in

But then what happens when you start eating again? Don't you just put the weight back on?

This works but it is not very healthy and will require more willpower than other ways. I would not suggest this.
