How do I lose weight?

  • I think it would suit me well. I have tried intermittent fasting in the past and found that once I stopped eating I stopped thinking about food. It was easier than I thought. The problem is that it's not socially acceptable to fast. What do I do when my family sits down to eat dinner? Or go to friend's house? Do I tell the truth or pretend to be ill? Say I already ate?

    • Fasting can work but if its inconvenient like it sounds like it is, and willpower is an issue for you, I would suggest something else.

Count calories and eat one less meal per day than you eat now. Tell me your height, weight and gender and I'll give you a calorie amount to start at. Eat that many for a week and if you don't lose weight, lower it by 200-300 calories and the repeat until you find an amount that provides steady weight loss.

    • This might be due to our different circumstances, but I would choose to outright say why I wouldn't be able to eat. Explain why you do it without exactly criticising binge eaters. Some might look down upon it, but I am sure most people would respect that.

Also, how about you do intermittent fasting only on some select days of the week? On the days when you expect to have a family gathering or an important event, then do not fast on that day. Finding a middle ground might be easier said than done, but it would be very rewarding.

As I try to brainstorm a bit more, how about you fast by default, but then you have a window of two days a week to break your fast?
