well I've been somewhat in this situation except I am female and well I told my best friend about my feelings for her and she didn't feel the same way for me. Even though she didn't have the same feelings for me I still feel much better that I got it off my chest. Just try to talk to him face to face if you can because if you talk to him over the phone he can easily hang up on you if doesn't feel the same way or lie about his feelings but talking to him face to face you can see the expression on his face and tell if he feels the same for yourself. If he is really your friend nothing should change between you guys even if he doesn't feel the same. But by the way you talk about your "almost gay moment" the chances of him feeling the same for you are most likely pretty high.
oh and a couple of ways to know if you are in love with him
1.Have you masturbated to him before?
2.If it came down to it would you really kiss him? or more, have sex with him?
