We all have to suffer in life. Manager of a shop told me school leavers are just going off sick all the time with everyday ailments and not able to cope with a full day's work. It's actually kinder to be strict with kids, because once they go out into the world on their own it will make it a lot easier. Discipline and manners were drummed into me from an early age and no crying unless someone died. All material possessions had to be earned. I think you are being a responsible parent.
