How do i interact with my dog?

If there's anyone who owns a dog and knows how to deal with a dog: today my parents have gone to a concert and they're not coming back till tomorrow.
When my parents are not home, all my dog does is sleep and eat till they come back. Doesn't she get bored? I fed her a few minutes ago then tried to play catch the ball but she wouldn't do anything. What should I do?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Because you asked a question that would be obvious to most children.

You're the one stressed over a dog being a dog.

Leave her alone! It's your dog so surely you already know what it's normal behavior is? Anyway, dogs are very good at letting humans know what they want so I'm sure if she gets bored with eating and sleeping (normal anyway) she'll let you know.

She'd probably love some patting and maybe brushing at some stage, but how come you don't already know that?

    • Because it's their dog, I play with her but I'm hardly interested, she looks really depressed about not having mum and dad around that's why I thought I should've done something. I'm not good with dogs and I have never planned on having one either...

  • Leave the dog alone. Not all dogs have the same kind of energy or interests. Some dogs just like to rest... both wrong with that.

Let the dog snuggle up to you and show you affection. There's a time for fun and a time for rest.

My dog is the same way without me. She just rests at the door unless someone offers her treats or walks. But if she sees a tall person wearing black she assumes it´s me until she can make out the scent :p

We are working on her separation anxiety though.

In the wild, animals are interested in doing only three things: eating, sleeping, and procreation. Everything they do relates to one of those things in some way.

Domesticated animals are no different. If your dog doesn't feel the need to engage in some pack bonding or to practice running down prey, then she's not going to be interested in chasing a ball. If her stomach is full, she's not going to be that interested in eating. If there's nothing else intriguing going on and the most important members of the pack area away, she's going to be happy to just snooze the day away.

Don't pester the dog just because you feel you should be doing something with it. If she wants something, she'll try to let you know.
