It helps more effectively remove plaque and might help with stains. My dentist told me this back when I had braces and I still use the method. I mean if it can keep your teeth sparkling with braces it'll work even more effectively without them.
Though I don't know why you care so deeply about it as long as you're teeth don't look horrendus and rotting and you've got the plaque off, they're healthy and you'll be fine. No need to be obsessed with getting them sheet white because it's not really natural.
