How dangerous could this have been?

TL;dr - Had a friend who was phasing in and out from alcohol, was this a situation that could have been dangerous?

I know this is not a regular is it normal question but I want to know someone else's opinion.

Last year I went to the finalist's prom. There was a friend of mine that started to drink local brewed wine before the food came. After dinner he was already pretty drunk and most of our friends too, so it looked normal.

After desert, me and my friends had to drag him outside, sit him next to a bin, and make him throw up. At that point he was barely conscious and was phasing in and out. Thankfully some of my friends "had experience with this": they made him eat bread, forced him to vomit, slapping all the time so he wouldn't pass out and putting sugar under his tongue for some "quick energy". I could sense the panic starting to build up as it became more difficult to keep him awake, to the point we were darn close to calling an ambulance. Thankfully, he wasn't throwing up anymore stuff, so we let him sleep while we surveilled him. He would randomly wake up, dance with his head to the current tune, then sleep again. After around 2 hours he suddenly could talk, and looked lively awake. Like nothing f*king happened.

How dangerous could this have been? Thia situation already made me scared of alcohol, but I want to know if that qualified as a coma or a live-or-die situation we avoided. AFAIK he drank around 8-11 glasses of wine in quick sucession.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Best solution is to not drink poison (aka alcohol) in the first place.

People pass out drunk if they've had too much, that's normal (not that it's a good idea lol). It's basically just falling asleep. However you can also die from alcohol poisoning and unless you are able to run blood tests and such it's actually pretty difficult for an average person to tell the difference. It really depends how much he drank, how strong it was and what his tolerance level is.

Nice of you to look after your friend though, a lot of kids wouldn't do that. If you are genuinely that worried in future then just call the ambulance, I'm sure his folks would thank you for it.

Edit: WOW just reread and he drank up to 11 glasses of wine? WOW that's a lot over the course of a meal especially for a young one. I hope he doesn't do that again in a hurry...

Water to drink would've been a good idea, given that alcohol causes dehydration (main symptom of hangovers).

I would've taken him to hospital: alcohol poisoning can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage, which maybe he already has if he drinks that much

    Here is what google says:

Symptoms of alcohol overdose include mental confusion, difficulty remaining conscious, vomiting, seizure, trouble breathing, slow heart rate, clammy skin, dulled responses such as no gag reflex (which prevents choking), and extremely low body temperature. Alcohol overdose can lead to permanent brain damage or death.

Alcohol poisoning. Also what is the local wine? There also is a chance he might be ingesting the wrong alcohols at his home such a methanol.
