I think ugly is the wrong word, but I think beauty/sexiness is not always obvious, you can be attracted to subtle things about a person like their mannerisms, body language, the way they hold themselves, a look in their eye. If you're referring to Freddie Mercury though, I think it is more a case that he was such a flamboyant and larger than life character, one of the greatest entertainers the world has known. That confidence is infectious and attractive, despite his teeth! Funny comment you posted about him being able to eat an apple through a picket fence, I love the man and queen but it made me laugh.
