Because you can't rely on other people to protect you. Only yourself.
If someone breaks into your house with the intent to kill you, the police are going to take at least five to ten minutes to arrive - and five to ten minutes is plenty of time for an intruder to murder you. A gun comes in handy.
While I don't believe civilians need access to powerful weaponry, there's nothing wrong with a pistol, shotgun, or rifle to keep your home and family safe.
With the millions of guns owned by Americans, its a shame that a few radical incel terrorists are making all gun owners look ludicrous.
Also; banning guns will just take them from the sane civilians who carry for protection, leaving illegal firearms in the hands of criminals and psychopaths who will continue to murder. It isn't as simple as "take the guns away" because of how easy it is to acquire them illegally.
Lets say hypothetically that there were truly no guns; not even for criminals.
If someone wants to murder, they will murder - you'd see knife attacks and stabbings go up, murder by car, acid attacks, poison, etc. As I said, people who want to kill will find a way to kill, regardless of the weapon.
In my eyes, the people who think civilians shouldn't own guns have never been in the position where they NEEDED a gun! :) I say this politely. I have had my fair share of run ins where if I hadn't had my concealed on me, I would have been in big trouble. Not every place in the states is a friendly place to live.
