How bad was michigan with segregation compared to other states?

So I live in Michigan, and my grandma has lived here all her life. She was born in 1933, and last time I talked to her she talked about not having a problem with Arabs other than speaking a different language, and said that “the blacks” were more violent. I told her that not all black people were like that, and she told me how when she went to school they were integrated, and that black and white people had their own neighborhoods but they were close to each other. I told my mom about this conversation and she told me that my grandma always said that black people were just normal people but eventually got their own way of talking and “culture,” or something along those lines, I don’t remember it word for word. (Funnily enough, my mom said that my grandma considered hillbilly’s worse, and said when they came along it ruined a lot. This is mainly funny because she considered my grandpa a hillbilly). I also remember seeing a map of the US and showing which states outlawed segregation, and Michigan outlawed it all the way back in 1950, a whole decade before the civil rights movement really got big! I can only say what I’ve learned from these things, but I’m curious what any other perspectives on this issue may have to offer .
