Homemade food better than fast food?

I much prefer homemade versions over fast food versions of most kinds of food. I buy fresh ground beef and make my own burgers instead of going to McDonald's, Wendy's, etc. I buy fresh ground beef, taco seasoning, tortillas, etc. and make my own tacos instead of getting Taco bell or any other taco drive thru place. I buy my own fresh chicken or fish, make my own breading and seasonings and fry it up at home instead of going to KFC, Long John Silvers, etc. I buy my own fresh meat and veg, and mix up Chinese ingredients from scratch and cook it myself rather than get Chinese take out. I make my own pasta dishes too. Pizza takeout I'll sometimes buy out. Anyway, with the examples above with the burgers, tacos, fried chicken/fish, and Chinese, I always choose homemade over fast food. It is more work this way but it tastes much better. Anyone else agree and do the same?

I guess it all depends on whose home we're talking about.

It depends, I like both. Sometimes homemade food is so boring, I just want to go lay and weep for hours. Other times, the mania of trying choose which fast food to eat, makes me want to check in at the local nut house and eat Prozac instead.

My experience was always the opposite: fastfood a welcome relief from the tyranny of terrible homemade food.

    • Homemade food is only terrible when cooked by someone who really doesn't care much what they're whipping up, they're not paying attention to or using the right ingredients, not using enough ingredients, they're cooking it in a half assed way, not paying attention to expiration dates, not using the freshest or quality meat, ingredients, and that they just really don't care much.

Oh, homemade is divine if done properly. Fastfood however will always be a luxury for me because of the food at home and the fact that we hardly ate out at all.

Homemade food is always better. Still, homemade burgers, fried chicken and fatty pizza aren't healthy. I rarely make such dishes. Much more healthier to start with a salad, then baked something (fish, chicken, pork...) with some vegetables on the side.

Do you make the burger buns from scratch too?

    • No, I buy them. Same with taco tortillas, and I buy the bags of dried pasta and rice. But all of the meat in all of the meals I make is fresh from the store, and the vegetables, and the ingredients and seasonings in everything including the burgers and tacos, the ingredients in the Chinese cooking I prepare, and the breadings on the fish and chicken is from scratch.

I wonder how many people could make say a pie or a quiche from scratch, with just the ingredients & a cookbook, no instructional videos.

This isn't a criticism, I'm just wondering again if people just don't learn a life skill like this anymore. Whether it was (or wasn't) at school, at home or just teaching yourself.

My brother for example if you gave him the goodies to make an omelette, he wouldn't know where to begin. He never needed to learn so he never bothered.

I never understood how people “can’t cook”, all you do is follow instructions. I’m no chef but if I wanna make something I just google a recipe for it and do what it says (or after awhile you can make your own judgments on what all to add or even do it from memory)

        Beat me to it.

  • Yes I do the same. Had homemade pizza with 5 cheeses and sausage sautéed in vinegar and red wine tonight. You can mix your own pizza dough in less than 10 minutes for about a $1.00. The entire pie was probably about $4.00.
My older sister takes her toddlers to fast food places when they are constipated.

    • Yes. Homemade food also produces less constipation as well as tasting better. It's just, like I said, more work and time consuming. Many people don't have the time to cook good food in the hustle and bustle of their lives often, fast food is much quicker and more convenient. I find the time myself to do it because I find the taste is well worth it when it's time to eat, and cooking is also a hobby I enjoy. I'll take your advice on making my own pizza the way you described it, that sounds good. Good homemade cooking is probably roughly around the same price as fast food when added all up, and it is cheaper than going to a quality restaurant, plus I like to eat good food in the comfort of my own home

      • Buy the dough from your local fav pizza place, the ones that aren’t chains usually sell it for $1-$2 and it will save you time. Most grocery stores carry it now too. Add your own fresh toppings. Invest in a pizza stone if you don’t have one and like crispy crust.

        • I'll do that, that sounds like it'll be some good pizza. And like with everything I make, I'll be very generous with the toppings. You know how Taco bells tacos have like half an ounce of beef in it (and not the highest quality I'm sure)? My soft tacos have from a quarter to a third a pound of freshly cooked ground beef in one tortilla, with homemade taco seasoning, cheese, sour cream, and, the funny ironic thing is, I add in Taco Bell's brand taco sauce on it, the only thing Taco bell makes which is quite good. I know it's a little weird, I make my own taco seasoning, but I put on store brand sour cream and taco sauce (medium, cause mild is too bland).

I'm just saying this to anyone reading this; anybody on a working class income can afford to do all this if they want, I'm totally working class, it's just a matter of finding the time.

            • Another reason my homemade taco seasoning tastes even better than store packets is that I add a little less salt and a little more cayenne pepper, onion powder, and spice than the packets contain. And no additives, another reason why I make as many things as I can in my cooking homemade.
